Power Ingredients: Vitamins for Healthy Skin

Your skin really has lots of talents: As the largest organ of the human body, it protects against external influences and loss of fluid, regulates your body temperature and is also an important sensory organ. Thus it is all the more important to care for it and provide it with active ingredients so that it can protect itself against external factors every day. Some of these power ingredients include vitamin C, A and E. Find out now what these power active ingredients are all about.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

Vitamin C supports your skin in many different areas: It is an antioxidant, helps build collagen and it acts against blemishes and acne.
Antioxidants like vitamin C protect our skin from free radicals, such as active oxygen, which can damage skin cells. These free radicals are produced during metabolic processes in the body. They attack cell membranes, skin lipids and proteins that you need for healthy skin. Environmental influences such as UV radiation, air pollution and nicotine also produce new free radicals.
However, vitamin C also promotes the build-up of collagen. Collagen tightens our skin: They form a structure, stretch the skin and thus lend it firmness. This collagen structure is located in the skin’s lower layers. So thanks to collagen, fewer new wrinkles appear and existing wrinkles don’t progress as deeply with a fresh, robust structure. Collagens belong to the proteins that are damaged by free radicals.
Ascorbic acid thus helps your skin’s health two-fold: It not only protects against free radicals, but also supports the body in the formation of new collagen.
But vitamin C is also beneficial for acne and blemishes by soothing skin inflammations. It calms the skin, making it appear smoother and healthier. The antioxidant effect also reduces the formation of new impurities.

Vitamin A (retinol)

Vitamin A or retinol, a variant of the vitamin, is known as an anti-ageing agent because it helps reduce wrinkles. In addition, it is also an antioxidant and supports the growth of the skin structure.
Vitamin A promotes the production of corneal cells, which form the top layer of the skin. In addition, vitamin A generally supports the skin’s regeneration process, improves and smoothens the skin’s appearance. By stimulating the production of new skin cells, vitamin A can also help against blemishes.
And vitamin A has a further benefit: Just like vitamin C, vitamin A also stimulates collagen formation and thus is effective against wrinkles.

Vitamin E (tocopherol)

Vitamin E is also an antioxidant and therefore protects against free radicals. Additionally, it helps our skin barrier to regenerate better, it strengthens its natural function and moisturises the corneal layer. This way, skin can retain moisture better in the long run. This is vital because properly hydrated skin looks smoother and wrinkles are prevented while elasticity is increased.
Especially with mature skin, the skin barrier increasingly weakens. Cracks can develop, making it easier for harmful external influences to enter the skin. This promotes redness, wrinkles, but also skin diseases such as neurodermatitis and rosacea.
Vitamin E additionally promotes the formation of new skin cells. That is why it is also used in wound creams.
