Effect:
Mannose binds to pili* of bacteria (mainly E. coli), thereby preventing the adhesion (binding) of the bacteria to the epithelium of the urinary tract (urothelium). This can prevent invasion and infection at the urothelium. Mannose is excreted unchanged in the urine.
Indication: For the prevention and treatment of a bladder infection.
Side effect: Digestive complaints (e.g. diarrhoea).
*Pili (singular: pilus) are cell extensions that enable the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to their host.
