PROJECT IN AFOGNAK, ALASKA

WE INVEST IN FOREST PROTECTION

Afognak is the second largest island in the Kodiak Archipelago off Alaska's southern coast and habitat for many species of wildlife, including the great Kodiak bear, Arctic char, rainbow trout and five species of Pacific salmon. The expansive timber industry, however, threatens Afognak and its still pristine wilderness.

The Afognak Forest Project improves biodiversity, water and all aspects of the local environment by securing the existing forest and protecting it as an intact and fully functioning ecosystem. The actual project activity is very low-key and focuses on conservation, restoration and preventive forest management on annually small plots. Beyond the 30-year crediting period, the old-growth forest is permanently protected.

PROJECT IN KORNBURI, THAILAND

WE INVEST IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT

The General Starch factory in Kornburi district produces tapioca starch from dried cassava grown by farmers in the region. The process produces large amounts of wastewater, which is stored in a series of open lagoons. This produces large amounts of the greenhouse gas methane, which is known to contribute to global warming.

The existing process was converted into a closed-loop system that captures the methane emissions and uses them to generate heat and electricity for the factory. The project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding the release of methane into the atmosphere, but also by reducing fossil fuel consumption.

The treatment process has improved wastewater quality so that the water can now be reused at the factory to wash the cassava, conserving valuable local groundwater resources. The new technology has improved air quality on site by reducing unpleasant odours and harmful emissions from the lagoons.
