Causes of deficiency states:

• Lack of source of B12
• Lack or deficiency of intrinsic factor
• Chronic gastritis
• Presence of antibodies against intrinsic factor
• Intake of proton pump inhibitors (inhibit stomach acid, but also intrinsic factor)
• Regular alcohol consumption
