Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a plant from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and has been used in Asian cuisine for over 3000 years. Alongside ginger, turmeric (Curcuma longa) and cardamom also belong to the same plant family. Originally native to Asia, ginger grows best in tropical and subtropical climates.
The rhizome of the ginger plant, often referred to as the "ginger root," forms characteristic finger-like projections and contains essential oils responsible for its typical spicy-citrusy aroma.
