A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.
With over 40,000 varieties, the rose is the flower whose scent has been most extensively researched by perfumers – a whole universe in which one can easily lose oneself in its infinite nuances. This exploration took a decisive turn in 1867 when the breeder Jean-Baptiste Guillot created 'La France', the first hybrid tea rose. With this innovation, Guillot introduced not only a new flower but also an olfactory signature that would forever shape perfumery. Today, when I perceive a tea note in a rose, I immediately recognise its descent from this historic hybridisation. The secret of this aroma lies in a particular molecule: ionone – which is used to replicate the scent of violets but is also a key component in the olfactory impression of tea.
