The glass transition phase and the optimal styling temperature
Independent scientific research* on the effects of heat on hair shows that hair undergoes the "glass transition" when heated. In this phase hair can be shaped and maintains this shape after cooling. The temperature of the glass transition phase can vary due to environmental factors and the moisture content of the hair, but scientists at ghd's research and development centre in Cambridge have found through extensive research that 185°C is the optimum temperature for the styler to achieve the greatest styling benefits in the fewest styling strokes. This also helps to retain the natural moisture in the hair and seals the cuticle layer, making each strand shinier and smoother and relatively impervious to moisture from the outside. Furthermore, the styling lasts longer.

Styling at temperatures below 185°C often requires several styling strokes to achieve satisfactory results, which is more drying and mechanically demanding on the hair than a stroke at 185°C. Styling at temperatures above 185°C exposes the hair to unnecessary heat, which can be dangerous. At temperatures above 215°C, the keratin protein in the hair begins to melt or evaporate, which leads to irreparable damage.
