The curcumin and its medicinal uses were already known 6000 years ago. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for a long time.
In India, curcuma is one of the most widely used spices, as it is believed to have a stomach and intestinal strengthening effect. There, curcuma is one of the so-called "hot" spices, which are supposed to give the body energy and cleanse it.
Today we know that the ingredients (curcuminoids) of Curcuma longa have many beneficial properties. These include its antioxidant potential, the memory-enhancing effect but also the harmonisation of inflammatory processes.
Studies with curcumin extracts show that the formation of proinflammatory tissue hormones (e.g. cytokines, prostaglandins) can be reduced through an interaction in the arachidonic acid metabolism and via inhibitory effects on the transcription factor NF-кB.
