Mabel Williams burns her eyelashes and eyebrows in the kitchen. In order to get them back and make them look halfway natural, she mixes Vaseline with ash and coal dust and rubs the spots with it.
This recipe is further developed by Thomas Lyle Williams, Mabel's brother, and finally becomes the first modern mascara.
